the english dub
hurry!! cover your precious ears!
Don't be surprised if this section might potentially harm your thoughts on future purchases of the Prince of Tennis anime dub in english. Only a fair warning before you approach. For me, the dub is a love/hate relationship. As much as I love the anime series being localized in English, it's just not the same without the Japanese. A lot of the funny Japanese jokes were kind of put to the wayside because they didn't translate well in English, and well... there was really no fun in that! Really, I'd only watch the dub to hear Sengoku's (or Kirihara's) voices. And even then, those aren't really noteworthy.
Now, i'm not someone who typically scorns on dub - on the contrary, I enjoy watching anime if they're speaking in my language! That means I don't have to pause to read long explanations on the screen, haha! But Prince of Tennis? Come on, VIZ, you could do better than that. The casting was awful save for Kikumaru, Tezuka and Fuji. Ryoma was alright but he could've been better. In fact, the entire thing could've been better! The voice acting kind of reminds me of that really old anime called Speed Racer in the way they spoke! None of it seemed really natural, in my opinion.
Sengoku? I know, you're probably going to think that this is another bias, but I really would honestly say that Sengoku's voice acting was DECENT for this series! In comparison to his team mates like Dan or Seigaku's Echizen, he was doing pretty well. Hearing Sengoku speak in English, in my opinion, was really refreshing since he wasn't so bad. Though, Sengoku's voice alone cannot save the dub from being severely (as fandom would call it) "raped" by VIZ.
Just another one of those rant-y sections, but Sengoku's dub is worthy of at least 5 minutes of your time. At least.
