the junior senbatsu
here comes the bishounen camp
Ah, here we go. My favorite arc of the anime (besides Nationals, Rikkai and Rokkaku). If you've never watched the anime or haven't gotten around to the last seasons of the series- somehow I think you're missing out. It's basically the "bishounen camp" (as dubbed by fans) where some of the ace players from each team gather up under one roof to decide who gets to face the overseas American Team. Yamabuki had ONE player come: Sengoku Kiyosumi and as an added helper, Dan Taichi.
I think i've said this many times before on this shrine - this is the arc (anime only) that introduces Sengoku's new style of tennis, boxing tennis, to draw out a bit more character development and fill in that Konomi plot hole. Since Sengoku was a part of the more important group, Ryuzaki's (then later, Tezuka's), he's gotten a bit of spotlight as opposed to the other members of the camp. In my section on covering his matches, I fail to note any of the practice ones. During the Senbatsu, he did hold a practice match against Momo, which doesn't really have much notoriety other than the fact it tells us Sengoku's story of his new tennis. Oh, and he actually won the practice match. If there's something about Sengoku that you should realize, we never see him win much of anything, no matter how hard he works. :P Yes, I am a bit bitter about that. Anyway.
So, Ryuzaki (Seigaku's coach) ended up getting sick in the middle of camp and Tezuka had to fill in her position. The members of Ryuzaki's group that were from Seigaku trust Tezuka, however the others didn't exactly believe that Tezuka was a level higher than anyone else since he's "just a junior high student" -- this idea was mostly introduced by Kajimoto (Jyosei Shonan), and ultimately the others (Sengoku being one of them) got skeptical about Tezuka's skills. They end up holding a practice match against Tezuka, one player at a time. Tezuka just uh, beats the crap out of everyone, Sengoku being the last one. Sengoku broke the Tezuka Zone by changing the speed of the ball's spin, but Tezuka is -- you know -- amazing and even during rehabilitation of his arm, he can still kick the asses of ace players from other schools.
The point of this section is: 1) Sengoku should be adored, he got chosen for the Invitational Team and ended up playing, read here for details on vs. Bobby Max, 2) This arc was a good way to draw out the "new" Sengoku, 3) Come on, can't you see this is worth it for the fanservice?, and finally 4) Sengoku was the only one chosen for Yamabuki. In. your. face. No, i'm not biased at all.
Oh, yeah. He rooms with Kamio from Fudomine.
